United Way Handbag Bingo raises funds for library’s summer reading program

The United Way’s Handbag Bingo event raised $850 for the Butts County Library Summer Reading Program. Pictured left to right during the donation presentation are Libby Spence, director of the reading program, Anissa Johnson, director of engagement for United Way of Greater Atlanta in the Southern Crescent, Sheryl Singletary, director of corporate relations for United Way of Greater Atlanta in the Southern Crescent, Beverly Stewart, member of the Butts County Library Board, and Bridget Daniel, assistant director of the Butts County Chamber of Commerce.

On May 9th, a group of ladies gathered to play Handbag Bingo at The Rivers Ranch. The United Way event raised $850 that was donated to the Jackson-Butts County Public Library Summer Reading Program on Tuesday, July 18.

The ladies night out program was sponsored by the United Way of Greater Atlanta in the Southern Crescent in cooperation with the Butts County Chamber of Commerce.

“The ladies paid $35 to play Bingo for a chance to win a designer purse,” said Chamber Associate Director Bridget Daniel. “The prizes were handbags from Michael Kors, Coach and other designers.”

Libby Spence, director of the library’s summer reading program, says donations like this are what make the program possible. The weekly programs were held twice every Tuesday this summer from June 6 through July 25.

Spence said the program runs on donations that allow her to recruit high quality professionals to entertain and teach children.

“The ultimate goal of the summer reading program is to entertain children and encourage them to read,” said Spence. “Studies show that children who read during the summer are better prepared for school in the fall.”

This summer’s program may be over, but Spence has already begun scheduling programs for next year. To donate to the summer reading program, call the library at 770-775-7524.
